The short and simple answer is yes, it does. There's countless studies that suggest acupuncture is an effective treatment for a variety of conditions
Many bodies of medical institutes agree that acupuncture is an effective form of treatment. The National Institute of Health (NIH) and World Health Organization (WHO) both have published lists of conditions that acupuncture can treat.
Acupuncture is an effective treatment for most people, but it may not be appropriate for everyone. Talk to your acupuncturist if you have any questions concerning your treatment.
Yes, it is safe as long as acupuncture is administered by a licensed individual to do so.
It is important to acknowledge that like any medical treatment acupuncture may have side effects or adverse effects. These are usually mild such as mild bleeding and bruising in the needling area, dizziness, fatigue or lightheadedness. These side effects can be avoided by making sure you're hydrated and have eaten something before coming in for a treatment. If possible, plan to take it easy for the rest of the day after treatment.
Everyone has different tolerances and sensitivity to acupuncture. Certain areas that are needled are typically more sensitive and other areas are less receptive to needling. We want you to be as comfortable as you can while maintaining sufficient therapeutic value to your treatment. We are happy to accommodate your needs by avoiding specific areas of the body you may not feel comfortable with.
An average human strand of hair is anywhere from 0.008-0.01cm in diameter. In comparison, an average acupuncture needle is about 0.003cm. That's around less than half the thickness of a strand of human hair. Many patients often report how pleasantly mild the needling sensation is and sometimes patients end up taking naps during an acupuncture treatment because of the needle's calming therapeutic effects.
After insertion, the practitioner may manipulate needles to elicit a response in your body. This may cause some discomfort but is rarely more painful than the initial insertion of needles. Needling sensations that are common include feelings of warmth, tingling, heaviness, tenderness or a dull numbing sensation. If any of the inserted needles are painful or causes discomfort for more than a few seconds, please let your practitioner know.
