Traditional Chinese medicine, or TCM, is an umbrella term for a system of healthcare dating back more than 2000 years in China. It utilizes many modalities such as acupuncture, herbs, nutrition, diet manual therapeutics such as massage and cupping, breathe and movement exercises such as Tai Chi, and lifestyle management to improve health.
Anchored in thousands of years of medical knowledge and records, TCM has produced and drawn inspiration from huge sources of wisdom throughout history such as Confucianism philosophy, Yin-Yang theory and books such as The Art of War (孫子兵法) or the Huángdì Nèijīng (黃帝內經 ).
Though "traditional" is in the name, Chinese medicine has a role to play in the modern world. To this day, the industry tackles modern day healthcare issues through evidence based medicine in conjunction with scientific studies. A well-known example of TCM herbal application would be the work of Nobel Prize winner Tu Youyou, in which an extract from an herb found in TCM was proven to be effective in the treatment of malaria. Though much of its details remain unanswered, Chinese medicine continues to positively impact patients and healthcare systems world wide.
